Philadelphia Men Injured in Vicious Dog Attack

A series of dog attacks in West Philadelphia on Friday resulted in police issuing a public safety warning urging people to steer clear of the Chamounix Drive area in Fairmount Park. The Philadelphia Police Department responded to the 3600 block of Chamounix Drive in the early morning hours Friday for reports of a pack of five vicious Pit Bulls roaming the area.

The Philadelphia Animal Care and Control Team (ACCT) was called to assist police in containing the animals, though attempts to restrain them caused them to attack. One dog turned its attention to another officer, who fired his weapon as it charged. The shot missed, but the gunfire startled the pack, which fled into the wooded areas of Fairmount Park. Authorities continue to search for the dogs and have advised residents and visitors to avoid the Fairmont Park area until further notice.

Philadelphia has strict laws regarding dog ownership to ensure public safety. All dogs must be licensed and vaccinated against rabies, leashed in public spaces, and securely contained on private property. Hundreds of dog bites are reported each year in the city, largely against young children.

Owners can be held liable for their dog’s aggressive or attacking behavior, which can result in fines or legal action for bites, injuries, and other damages. Under Pennsylvania’s Dangerous Dog Laws, owners of dog breeds deemed dangerous, including Pit Bulls, must register the animals, secure them in proper enclosures, and maintain liability insurance in case of attacks or injuries to others.

Call the police or ACCT to report a dog attack and any injuries. If you are bitten, seek medical attention as soon as possible. Additionally, you should report the attack and bites to the Philadelphia Department of Public Health.
