Philadelphia Woman Killed in Hit-and-Run
Philadelphia Woman Killed in Hit-and-Run
A woman was killed by a hit-and-run driver Tuesday at the intersection of Reservoir Drive and Diamond Street in Philadelphia’s Fairmount Park. According to police, the vehicle was heading in an unknown direction when it collided with the woman, who was either in a wheelchair or pushing it when struck.
The Philadelphia Police Chief Inspector said the woman was struck with such force that she was found 100 feet from the shattered wheelchair. One of her shoes was discovered approximately 100 feet away in the opposite direction.
Two good Samaritans stopped to help the woman, who they said was initially semiconscious, though suffering severe head and bodily injuries, police said. She later succumbed to her injuries and emergency medical personnel pronounced the woman dead on the scene shortly after arriving.
Investigators were not immediately certain what type of vehicle was involved or which direction it was headed at the time of the accident. Officials are hopeful that silver-colored broken car parts at the scene and nearby surveillance footage will help determine the type of car and potentially identify the driver.
Police are working to identify the woman and anyone with information regarding her identity or the hit-and-run is urged to contact the Crash Investigation Division.
The Philadelphia Police Department reports that the city investigates hundreds of hit-and-run accidents each year. Over 1,000 hit-and-run accidents occurred in Philadelphia in 2022 alone, many resulting in severe injuries or fatalities. Hit-and-run accidents maintain a notable percentage of the city’s overall traffic accidents and have gradually increased over the past decade.
