Woman Fatally Struck by Tractor-Trailer in North Philadelphia
Philadelphia Police are investigating a fatal accident in North Philadelphia, where a 53-year-old woman was struck and killed by a tractor-trailer. Officials said the woman was hit as the truck was making a left turn exiting a gas station on Frankford Avenue in the early morning hours Monday.
According to police, the woman walked in front of the turning truck and was not visible to the driver. Upon collision, she became trapped under the vehicle and was pronounced at the scene. No information on the woman’s identity has been released. No charges have been filed against the truck driver, and the investigation is ongoing.
Pedestrians are especially vulnerable when walking near tractor-trailers. Due to their size, they have substantial blind spots, which cause drivers to have limited visibility, particularly in front of or behind the trailer and on both sides. A tractor-trailer’s weight and momentum make stopping quickly difficult, compounding the risk of severe or fatal pedestrian injuries.
Truck drivers have especially limited visibility of pedestrians walking close to them, especially when making wide turns, reversing, or maneuvering tight spaces. Tractor-trailers in intersections, parking lots, and driveways can be especially dangerous for pedestrians and significantly increase the risk of accidents.
When walking near a moving tractor-trailer, stay out of the truck’s blind spots and remain a safe distance to reduce the likelihood of being struck.
